FEMININITY IN HOUSE

Milano design week

I am happy to observe that decoration is making its way, often detested by the intransigent purism of many designers.

After years of prevailing minimalism, of rigorous forms, of absolute domination of whites, grays, and dove grays, precious materials have returned like marble, onyx, brass, velvets, precious woods, inlays, wallpapers… colors and forms that take us back to the 20s and 30s of art deco.

Is it not a return to soft, enveloping forms, to warm and reassuring atmospheres that psychologically recall the female world?

It is a personal thought, but I like to think that a strong poetic and creative streak is entering the world of design, inhabited for so long by male figures.

Designers that I admired, but that definitely represent a masculine image of housing, rigorous and perfect.

The grace, the daintiness, the gentleness that represent the female soul and the interpretations of environments make the difference!

There have been female figures that have dared to move the waters, introducing a play of materials and forms that have not been seen in a while.

A queen is surely Patricia Urquiola, who has always experimented with combinations of weaving, straws, new materials and forms, that lead back to the craft and traditions of her homeland, Spain.

Another woman is Cristina Celestino that is able to harmonize archetype forms and materials using decoration with great originality. Like the “Happy Room” table she designed for Fendi, that recalls the shape of a big earring. A poetic and refined interpretation of an object we all know.

Cristina Celestino

I could talk about the histrionic Paola Navone or the young Elena Salmistraro or the originality Faye Toogood, but they deserve a detailed description… that I will save for another article.

For the time being I feel like saying this: the fascinating complexity and fantastic female world has entered strongly in the visions of housing.

And I am happy about it!
