A SEA OF BLUE


Summer brings us to the sea, to cloudless skies, to blue on blue. It is only natural for me to pick up those thoughts on colors I started a while ago, to talk about the strength of blue. Vital and soothing, it can become melancholic and powerful in other tonalities.

Blue represents silence, tenderness, quietness. It’s the color of introspection and meditation, it gives a sense of serenity, is slows blood pressure, breathing. To add this color in a room, it makes heart beats diminish, sensibility to cold heightens, and objects seem smaller and more lightweight.

In Feng shui, the ancient Chinese art that helps harmonize the house to benefit the physical health of who lives there, the darker tones of blue bring towards the yin form of water energy, so towards the inside and are linked to instinct, intuition, and dreams. Its calming effect is unquestionable, since it recalls water, especially in less bright tonalities, and this is why I often use it in bedrooms and bathrooms. It is very effective with white, and easily combined with green.

It is used on police cars to reassure, to convey trust on travel agency posters or in insurance companies. In interior design, we often see it combined with white in wonderful beach houses, in cottages, or in ceramic pieces used to decorate tables or walls. Turquois has a more modern and vital side. ht tonalities, and this is why I often use it in bedrooms and bathrooms. It is very effective with white, and easily combined with green.

Blue helps give depth to a small room. Used on sofas, armchairs, or accessories helps give personality to the room. Obviously, if inserted in a continual solution it is less invasive, but this is true with any color. Mixed with white or gray it can have a very refined result, taking tonalities of sugar paper or sky blue. y I often use it in bedrooms and bathrooms. It is a masculine color, but it gains a unique seductive value if combined with materials that I define as feminine, like velvet, satin, moquette, or other rounded forms.
